1935 – Born in Waco, North Carolina on the 4th of January.

1952 – At aged 17, Patterson won the Gold medal in the Helsinki Olympics as a middleweight.

1952 – He turned out to be a good year for the young Patterson; in addition to Olympic gold, he won the National Amateur Middleweight Championship and a Golden Gloves.

1956 – He got his championship chance when he fought Archie Moore on the 30th of November, for the world heavyweight championship left vacant by Rocky Marciano.

1959 – Johansson triumphed over Patterson on the 26th of June, with the referee Ruby Goldstein stopping the fight in the third round after the Swede had knocked Patterson down seven times.

1960 – Patterson knocked Johansson out in the fifth round of their rematch on the 20th of June, with a leaping left hook to become the first man to recover the world’s undisputed heavyweight title.

1961 – A third fight between them was held on the 13th of March, and while Johansson put Patterson on the floor, Patterson retained his title by a knockout in six to win a wild rubber match in which Patterson was decked twice and Johannson once in the first round.

1962 – Patterson lost his title on the 25th of September, by a knockout in the first round to Sonny Liston.

1963 – Ten months later on the 22nd of July, Patterson attempted to become the first boxer ever to win the world’s Heavyweight title three times, but Liston once again knocked him out in the first round.

1966 – He traveled to England and defeated British boxer Henry Cooper in just four rounds at Wembley Stadium.

1967 – Ali was stripped of the heavyweight title for refusing military service after being drafted into the United States Army.

1969 – In September, he divorced his first wife Sandra Hicks Patterson.

1972 – Patterson went on, defeating Oscar Bonavena in ten rounds.

         – A final defeat to Muhammad Ali in a rematch for the North American Heavyweight title on the 20th of September convinced Patterson to retire at the age of 37.

         – He also became a member of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame.

2006 – Died at home in New Paltz on the 11th of May at age 71. He is buried at New Paltz Rural Cemetery in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York.
