Oglethorpe, James Edward

1696 – James Edward Oglethorpe, born on the 22nd of December in London, England. He was an English general, a philanthropist, and a founder of the state of Georgia.

1714 – He entered Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

       – And joined the army of Prince Eugène.

1716 – 1717 – Through the recommendation of the duke of Marlborough he became aide-de-camp to the prince, and he served with distinction in the campaign against the Turks.

1722 – A chosen member of parliament for Haslemere.

1732 – He arrived on the North American continent via the ship "Ann".

       – He and his associates received a Royal Charter on 9th June.

1745 – He was promoted to the rank of major-general.

1765 – He was raised to the rank of general.

1785 – He died at Cranham Hall, Essex, on the 1st of July.
