1926 – He was elected  county attorney for Mitchell County, Texas.

1927 – He served as a District Attorney.

1934 – He was elected to the United States House of Representatives.

1964 – He became chairman of the United States House Committee on Appropriations.

1979 – He retired from the United States House of Representatives.
