1931 – Jacob Dyneley Beam began his career in foreign service serving in Geneva.


1934-1940 – Served in Berlin and London during World War II, and as a political advisor in occupied Germany after the War.


1952-1953 – Acting head at the Embassy in Moscow.


1957-1961 – Served as US ambassador to Poland.


1966-1969 – US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the Soviet invasion of that country.


1969-1974 – Appointed as US ambassador to Soviet Union.


1974-1977 – Worked as director of Radio Free Europe.
